Fireman's Ball

[A hint for all UNC basketball fans, duck hunters, fishermen, lovers of Ocracoke, and collectors of fine arts and crafts -- be sure to read this entire post to see the very valuable items being auctioned off at the Fireman's Ball.]

For all of our on-island readers, and visitors who plan to be on the island this weekend....Remember to come out for the 4th annual Fireman's Ball on Saturday. There will be a pig pickin', auctions, and dance, starting at 5 pm at the Community Center. It's a great event for a great cause. And you can read more here.

I've also posted all of the wonderful items that will be auctioned off at both a silent auction and a live auction. You can see the full lists here (they are Adobe pdf files):
  • Silent Auction (5 pm - 6:45 pm)
  • Live Auction (starting at 7 pm -- please note, this poster says "Silent Auction" on the right side, but that is a mistake)
I am the auctioneer, so I perused the items yesterday evening. Everyone should know some of the fantastic items being offered for sale.

They include original art, pottery, local bird carvings, restaurant dinners, island lodging, jewelry, live music, a massage, fresh clams, quilts,...and much more, including (drum roll here)...guided duck hunting, (more drum rolls)...inshore and offshore fishing charters, (more drum rolls)...a 2009 Championship UNC Chapel Hill basketball signed by players and coaches! (If you can't be here, you might want to contact one of your island friends to bid on some of these one-of-a-kind items for you.)

Hope to see many of you there!

Our latest Ocracoke Newsletter is a history of paved roads on Ocracoke. It may not sound very exciting, but there have been dramatic changes on the island because of the construction of paved roads a half century ago. You can read the newsletter, and see some rare photos here.

A HUGE thank you to Philip from the organizers for his great job (once again) with the auction. It was very well organized, excellent flow; and he was his usual entertaining auctioneer self.

    Philip,

I'm just catching up on posts for the last couple of weeks and discovered I've missed the auction(although I would have had to try to find someone to bid on my behalf). I'm sorry I missed the opportunity to try for the UNC basketball for my daughter. Are there any left over items that are up for general purchase? Just out of curiousity, how much did the basketball go for?

  4. We sold every item at the auction. I'll post some final figures in a day or so, but the basketball sold for $2,600.00.

That's fantastic! I would have had to drop out before it hit that much so now I don't feel so bad about missing out on bidding. Glad the night was a big success.
We'll be down for our summer trip the last week in June (not soon enough). See you then.
