Bill

We all breathed a sigh of relief when it became apparent that Hurricane Bill would track well east of the Outer Banks. Lately we've learned (to no one's surprise) that Bill will nevertheless be causing unusually high tides and, perhaps, ocean overwash, mainly north of Cape Hatteras. If so, water on the road is most likely Saturday mid-morning and about 9:30 pm, the times of normal high tide. If you are planning to drive down the Banks tomorrow please listen for the latest reports re. NC Highway 12.

This month's Ocracoke Newsletter is Lou Ann's story about volunteering for turtle patrol with the National Park Service. You can read her story and see her pictures here: http://www.villagecraftsmen.com/news072809.htm.

    Philip,
I'm happy to see that Bill is going to spare Ocracoke. But it makes me wonder: when was the last time Ocracoke was hit by a hurricane?

    See you in September,
    Heather and Addison

  2. Hurricane Alex hit Ocracoke on August 3, 2004. Although the wind was not terribly strong, the tide surged through the village and destroyed hundreds of automobiles. It was the highest tide on Ocracoke since the devastating 1944 hurricane. Hurricane Isabel also brought tides across the island in 2003.
